This summer, in a survey of 10,000 people, Ipsos looked at the mobility habits of the French. Focus on the recent results of this poll, revealing that the French are still very dependent on their personal car. But to what degree? To learn more, discover the main figures of this study.
The French and their car : a great love story
87%. This is the number of French people who use their cars at least once a day. By habit, facility or even obligation, it is difficult for almost 9 out of 10 French people to do without their car. Whether it’s for shopping (83%), going to work or going to the doctor (61%), the car has become an indispensable alternative for getting around. With an average time of 35 minutes to get to work or 19 minutes to go shopping, the French spend a fair amount of time in their daily commute.
Another important figure to note is 244 euros, representing the average monthly expense on the car. This is the most expensive mean of transport. This amount includes petrol, insurance, repairs, tolls, credit and parking costs.
French people wanting more sustainable mobility
Following the car, 75% of French people prefer to walk, especially to go to the pharmacy for example. Public transport (bus, metro, tram, train, etc.) is used by 31% of French people. That’s a third of the population who spend an average of 40 euros per month on it. While more and more cities and mobility stakeholders are thinking about soft alternative solutions, “no-motorised 2-wheelers” (bicycles, scooters, etc.) are favoured by only 5% of the panel. Similarly, car-sharing, which closes the ranking with only 2% of the panel.
Initially, this could be due to the sometimes high price of these solutions. Indeed, seven out of ten French people would like to benefit from a transport fare lower than the usual cost of their car journeys. Not to mention that in some rural areas, residents have no choice but to use their car to get to the city. Indeed, in rural areas, 74% of working people use their car to get to work, compared with only 55% in areas bordering the city. Which is still quite high! So the question, how can we succeed to provide mobility, more practical, interconnected and sustainable.
